Local Writer Gets ‘The New Yorker’ Bump

Apparently The New Yorker magazine agrees with the Dose, “Ring Master: Vince McMahon and the Unmaking of America” by Abraham Josephine Riesman is one of the best books of 2023! Riesman is also the author of “True Believer: The Rise and Fall of Stan Lee,” and a longtime staffer at New York magazine and its culture site, Vulture. Known to friends and family as Josie, she now lives in Providence with her spouse and their cats and has been a huge pro wrestling fan her whole life.

“If wrestling is an art, one man is both its Michelangelo and its Medici.” Riesman traces parallels between wrestling’s manipulate narratives and the wider cultural substitution of performance for substance which climaxed with the election of T**** [our edit, his name will never appear in this space]. “Vince had proven to the wrestling world what T**** would one day prove to everyone else,” she concludes. “Nothing was true, and everything was permitted.”

I already knew Josie before attending last May’s ‘meet the author’ at Books on the Square, so I knew it would be fun. She hosted the event with the help of RI State Rep David Morales, himself a wrestler with the Renegade Wrestling Alliance, and it was hugely entertaining. The crowd really knew their wrestling history and the back-and-forth was hilarious. Josie is smart and just a gas to hang with. Follow her at IG.

And go buy her books at the independent bookstore in your neighborhood!
