New Traffic Pattern 95 Northbound

The RI Department of Transportation (RIDOT) are advising drivers of an upcoming change to the traffic pattern on the I-95 North Viaduct, after the Downtown exit and near Providence Place Mall in Providence. The shift will take place in the morning well before the expected storm comes through.

Travelers going north on I-95 in Providence need to be alert for a shift of the exit to Route 146 and State House Offices — the new split will occur one mile south of its present location. So drivers will need to take the exit sooner than they had previously been used to.

All traffic for Route 146 and State Offices must use the right lane after the Downtown exit.

RIDOT created a video simulation of the new traffic pattern for what you can expect.

WPRI adds this helpful hint:

Drivers who miss the exit should keep driving on I-95 and take the Branch Avenue exit. There they can turn left onto Branch Avenue to get to Route 146 or turn right for North Main Street, which leads them to the State Offices area.

This new design appears to bring some much-needed sanity to this stretch of highway.
