Langston Hughes Poetry Reading At PPL

(2.4) What better way to kick off Black History Month than with the 29th Annual Langston Hughes Poetry Reading this Sunday in the Farish Auditorium at the Providence Public Library. Readings will be supported with music from Courtland Club regulars, the Leland Baker Trio.

This year’s poetry reading will focus on Hughes’s life as a global poet – from serving as a steward on a freighter bound to Africa to seafaring around Europe to reporting as a newspaper correspondent during the Spanish Civil War. Besides those in Africa and Europe, the countries Hughes visited included Haiti, Japan and the then-Soviet Union.

The Leland Baker Trio, led by Leland Baker, a jazz saxophonist and music educator who has lived and spent time honing his craft in the great cities of New Orleans, New York City and here in Rhode Island, will accompany the event’s diverse group of readers.

PPL opens 12:15pm/ Farish opens 12:30pm/ Event starts 1pm.

Masks will be required and available on site.
