RISD Senior Shows At Woods-Gerry

The RISD senior shows have started up at the Woods-Gerry Gallery. These exhibitions run through the end of May, with each one lasting only four days. Up now through March 5 is Industrial Design. This category addresses so many areas of modern life — everything really — that a unifying theme can be hard to display: hence the somewhat incoherent look here. But that is the nature of the beast. Another room is mostly backpacks, knapsacks, hammocks and such, and there is always a bike on the wall. Unlike painting or sculpture, the study of industrial design is relatively modern, arising out of the industrial revolution . . . all manufactured products are the result of a design process. From Wiki:

Industrial design is a process of design applied to physical products that are to be manufactured by mass production. It is the creative act of determining and defining a product’s form and features, which takes place in advance of the manufacture or production of the product.

Hours: Friday, Saturday & Monday, 10am to 5pm/ Sunday, 2pm to 5pm/ Tuesday, 10am to 4pm. Closed Wednesday & Thursday.

The reception the night before is usually a boisterous student party — particularly in the warm weather when it spills out on the terrace; these can be fun to attend but are not ideal for viewing the work. Each show is pulled down at the end of Tuesday.

Coming up: March 8, Graphic Design/ March 15, Painting 1/ March 22, Painting 2. Go here for complete schedule and gallery info.
