Trout Season Starts

Saturday, April 13, marks the beginning of trout fishing season in Rhode Island, so things will be hopping over at Ocean State Tackle on Branch Avenue. They will be opening at 4:30am with green crabs, Power Baits, and all your other angling needs. Owner Dave Henault can answer all your questions.

Information on applying for a license can be found at the DEM’s FAQ page. The DEM’s Division of Fish and Wildlife has been busy stocking more than 100 ponds, rivers, brooks and lakes with a variety of trout and salmon (I believe that page goes live on Saturday).

While freshwater fishing is open year-round for other species, waters that are stocked for trout are closed while DEM prepares for the traditional opening day that occurs on the second Saturday in April.

Recreational Freshwater Fishing Licenses are required of anglers fifteen (15) years of age and older.

The OST window will open 6am, Friday, April 12th and remain open until 7pm to accommodate anglers who want to be out Friday night. But the season starts Saturday.

Sukha and Purna, Dave’s two awesome Labs, are the store’s official greeters. (Dave is a practicing Tibetan Buddhist: Sukha is Sanskrit for “happiness” and Prana means “breath, or life force.”)

Trout fishing season runs from April 13, 2024 to February 28, 2025.

4:30am to 7pm, Saturday, April 8, Ocean State Tackle, 430 Branch Avenue, (directions)
