Cello Fest

(5.18) You have two opportunities for attending the PVD Cello Fest coming up: An evening of performances on Friday night at the Mathewson Street Church; and a day of events on Saturday at the Providence Public Library.

7pm, Friday, May 17, 134 Mathewson Street.

Cello Fest Kicks off with an exciting evening of multi-genre cellos! Jake Sokolov, James Perretta, Flannery Brown, Prior Panic, and Rob Bethel perform folk music, alternative songs, experimental music, improvised music, and music for viola da gamba! Additionally, a trio of Isabel Castellvi, Kamyron Williams, and Zan Berry will premiere a new cello trio by local composer Tom Swafford!

10am to 3pm, Saturday, May 18, PPL, 150 Empire Street.

The day will open with a workshop open to all levels: Brazilian Rhythms and Techniques for Strings, led by our 2024 guest artist Kely Pinheiro. Throughout the day, you can come join an old-time music jam led by local musicians, and there will be performances by cellists Ted Mook, Adrienne Taylor, Isabel Castellvi and Kumar Das (tabla), Laura Cetilia, Kari Juusela and Sidy Maiga (djembe), and cello quartet performances from local high school students.. We will end the afternoon with a large group rendition of Terry Riley’s minimalist work, In C!

Saturday concludes back at the church at 7pm:

Cello Fest concludes with a night of traditional and original Brazilian music featuring our headliner, Kely Pinheiro! Kely will do a solo set of music for cello and voice and she will be joined by a cello ensemble, playing a range of Brazilian music.

All Cello Fest events are ticketed based on a pay what you can model, with all donations going directly to support festival musicians.
