An online auction for the last of the McCoy Stadium stuff opened yesterday and continues through July 26th. They are down to some signs, murals (labeled as ‘not original’), and rows of seats. From the ProJo:
The city noted that many items have been damaged or marred by graffiti, and the Worcester Red Sox took most of the furnishings when they relocated. The stadium has been vacant since 2019, when the PawSox moved to Worcester.
Not included in the auction is the statue of beloved PawSox owner Ben Mondor doing his best Buford Pusser impression (if Buford Pusser had been a big lovable teddy bear). Back in 2022 Ethan Shorey at The Valley Breeze inquired about the statue’s whereabouts:
Emily Rizzo, spokesperson for Mayor Donald Grebien, confirmed this week that the statue was not auctioned off and that it was palletized and placed in a secure storage location for safekeeping. “That was obviously a big thing for the mayor,” she said, adding that there are no plans to auction it off. The city owns the statue, said Rizzo, saying there are no plans to sell it and there are discussions about how it might be incorporated into the city in the future.
Apparently Polar Park didn’t want it reminding fans of the good old days. And so Mr. Mondor must remain palletized.
