(8.1) The RI Philharmonic Summer Pops Concert will take place this Thursday at the Temple to Music in Roger Williams Park. (This has been rescheduled from original date due to weather.) Conductor Troy Quinn has a diverse musical program on tap:
A George M. Cohan Overture/ Fanfare for Tomorrow/ ‘Harry’s Wondrous World’ from Harry Potter
Pirates of the Caribbean/James Bond Theme/ Downtown
Theme from Family Guy/ Tico Tico/ ‘Wide Receiver’ (Theme from NBC Football)
‘Rookie of the Year’ end credits/ Mambo Italiano
March from 1941/ The Happy Ending Medley/1812 Overture
Some explanation for those new to town: Composer Bill Conti (hundreds of movie and tv themes) was born in Providence; ‘Family Guy’ creator Seth MacFarlane is a RISD alum— the show is set in and around town; George M. Cohan was born in Providence.
This is a rousing program of crowd-pleasers. No ‘Volga Boat Song’ for this event. And you may not think you know the Cohan songbook, but you do.
This is a beautiful setting. Bring beach chairs and blankets.
The Temple to Music is celebrating its 100th birthday!
