RIIFF Opens

Head over to the Providence Performing Arts Center tonight for the opening ceremony of the Flickers RI International Film Festival. The evening will feature six short subjects running 108 minutes. The festival features documentary, narrative, and animated films in all genres, screening in venues around the city including the Avon Cinema, the RISD Metcalf Auditorium, the Vets, the District Park, and even the Showcase.

A brilliant and memorable selection of premiere short films from around the world await audiences at the gala opening night of the 41st Edition of Flickers. This year’s Opening Night will also feature a special screening of the iconic 1956 short film “The Red Balloon” directed by Albert Lamorisse with musical accompaniment by world renowned theatre organist, Peter Krasinski.

The Red Balloon, or Le Ballon Rouge, is a strange little French film in which “a red balloon with a mind of its own follows a little boy around the streets of Paris.” Running time: 34 minutes. Not rated. (We are big fans of Mr. Krasinski.)

The festival ends with a full day of programming on August 11th at the Farish Auditorium at the Providence Public Library.
