A new restaurant from chef Diego Alcantar has opened downtown across from Grant’s Block. Cielito will be serving dinners for this first week (Thursday thru Saturday) expanding to lunches and dinner after that. From In Downcity:
Cielito is the second restaurant opened by chef and owner Diego Alcantar. He previously opened the popular taco spot Tuxpan Taqueria in Central Falls, RI, in 2022. (Curious? Read more about Diego, Tuxpan, and Cielito, in Diego’s own words!) And, after both devouring some delicious tacos and congratulating Alcantar on this year’s James Beard Award nomination, we personally cannot wait to dive into the dishes at Cielito.
From In Downcity’s interview with Mr. Alcantar:
Cielito comes from a well-known Mexican song by Vicente Fernández who is known for his music in Mexico. Cielito was also the name of my parent’s grocery store back in Mexico. Cielito provided for those in need in our community. I always remember my mom would say, ‘God will multiply it for you,’ and even today, our family continues to live by her saying.
Musical chairs: Cielito occupies the site of the original Oberlin and faces the new Oberlin now at Grant’s block across Union Street. The new Ellie’s is opening next door where Kleo’s used to be, to the left in this photo.
Closed Sundays.
