Ellie’s Returns

Ellie’s will officially reopen Saturday in their new location at the corner of Union and Westminster Streets. They held a soft opening today and I can vouch for the macarons . . . they are ready. In fact everything seemed to be moving smoothly along. Ellie’s will feature both indoor and outdoor seating for breakfast (served 8am to 3pm) and lunch (9am to 3pm), Wednesday through Sunday. Coffee, tea, and espresso beverages for now. More from In Downcity.

Following the reopening, there will be exciting new additions to the menu. We also hear they’ll continue to serve breakfast and lunch, with the expansion into an evening wine bar in the fall. (We’ll raise a glass to that.)

Breakfast includes quiche, oeufs en cocotte, and avocado toast. Lunch features a soup du jour, salads and sandwiches (croque monsieur . . . roasted pork belly!) and Ellie’s poutine. Check out the menu.

The interior decor is blue and white, country French, with tiled surfaces, blue hanging barn doors, a rolling pin collection, and the rooster. Tables — two-tops, four-tops, and a community table — are a mix of wood and marble.

(And check out the ‘About’ page for some swell old photographs of downtown street scenes.)

Entrance is on the Union Street side, seen here. To the right in this picture is the new Mexican restaurant, Cielito.

Light and bright space protected from afternoon sun by the gorgeous striped awnings on the exterior.

These are smaller than standard size. Definitely worth the $3.
