Secretary of Commerce, and our former governor, Gina Raimondo was interviewed* on “60 Minutes” this past weekend. One topic was the ‘CHIPS and Science Act’ through which billions of dollars are being distributed to companies who will advance U.S. microchip production, creating jobs and keeping our advanced chip technology out of Russia and China.
Increasing domestic chip manufacturing is a worthy goal but the administration will be awarding up to $1.6 billion in grants to Dallas-based Texas Instruments, part of which will help in the construction of a plant in Sherman, Texas. Minor problem: Women can not safely apply for these jobs! Women can not safely move to, or live in, Texas. Women already living in Texas are suffering — women who wanted to be pregnant! And in pro-life Texas, infant mortality is increasing. These jobs are not currently available to all the women who were encouraged to get involved in the STEM fields . . . the women whose tax-dollars are helping to pay for this plant.
Stahl (who should probably be working for the Wall Street Journal) raised concerns about the “strings attached” to these grants, like the day care requirements. Raimondo answered:
You won’t have enough workers to do the job unless you figure out how to get women working in the facilities.
Well maybe we shouldn’t be funding plants in states where women can not get modern heath care!
*Unfortunately this interview was conducted by Lesley Stahl who lost all credibility last year with her unchallenging piece on Marjorie Taylor Green, in which she called Green “smart.” Meanwhile, Rhodes scholar Gina Raimondo, who went to Harvard and Yale Law, was not identified as such by Stahl.
Stahl also still seems to believe the current economy corrects itself via free market forces, starting one question with “It was shown . . .” going on to state something that has absolutely not been shown. Gina did not let this false premise pass because . . . smart.
