Ronny Chieng — The Vets

(11.16) We all need to keep laughing. Actor and comedian Ronny Chieng brings his “The Love to Hate It Tour” to the Vets Auditorium this Saturday. While Chieng has appeared in major movies like “Crazy Rich Asians” and “M3GAN” he is best known for his regular slot on “The Daily Show.” (And this sounds promising: Chieng and Jimmy O. Yang will star in the upcoming Hulu series “Interior Chinatown” set to premiere next week.) The stand-up special of this tour is still in the works; maybe Providence will be in it? According to Deadline:

Ronny Chieng, one of the hosts of The Daily Show, is getting back into the stand-up specials business. The comedian has set his latest special Love To Hate It for Netflix to be released on December 17.

Children under six years of age not permitted. They are unlikely to appreciate a Liz Cheney reference.

More comedy is coming later this month when Nick Swardson brings his Toilet Head Tour to The Vets on Friday, November 22.

Join Nick Swardson, America’s Sweetheart, as he tackles the hard issues of diarrhea, edibles and Norm MacDonald.

I’m not sure this is exactly my cup of tea, but I loved Swardson as Terry Bernadino on “Reno 911!” Judging from a profile in The LA Times, his stand-up persona may lack the loopy innocence of Terry, a lovable chaos agent on skates.

I talk about a lot of the same topics that I usually do, but I’m trying to stay away from certain things. … I don’t party like I used to, I don’t drink like I used to, so I want to get away from that image where people think I’m like some lunatic. I don’t do drugs . . . But in my new act, I have a diarrhea joke of course, I talked about Norm MacDonald, and I talk about a bunch of true stories — it’s just silly. My act is a good time, it’s not political, I don’t have an agenda. I’m exactly how I am onstage as I am offstage.

I’m not crazy about diarrhea jokes, but flatulence can be amusing in small doses. And if edibles must come up, it may be by way of explaining his recent misstep onstage in Colorado. Because let’s be clear: There is no such thing as “pot humor.” No one has ever ever made a funny marijuana joke. It is not a recognized category.

(And Norm McDonald was the best.)
