Berk’s To Close

Berk’s shoe store on Thayer Street will be closing after 50 years of business. They will be closing their doors on January 25th which just happens to be St. Hubbins Day! Five decades is an incredible run, and owner (and Moses Brown alum) Stephen Berk has certainly earned some time off. There are big discounts and the place was already hopping this morning. The ProJo spoke with Mr. Berk who rattled off the A-List names who have walked through the door:

“Parents’ weekend, we’d all be on the lookout,” he said.

Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and her sister, Lee Radziwill, stopped in when John F. Kennedy, Jr. was a student at Brown, he recalls. So did Stephen Spielberg, Sigourney Weaver, Bruce Willis, and Cher. Amy Carter, the daughter of President Jimmy Carter, shopped at Berk’s, he said. So did “Harry Potter” actress Emma Watson, and the daughters of singer Diana Ross.

He can’t recall what they bought – but he does remember that Green Day singer Billie Joe Armstrong came in and bought a pair of platforms when he came to Providence for a concert.

Big thanks to Mr. Berk and daughter Lauren for decades of quality footwear!
