The Lunar New Year starts this Wednesday, kicking off the two-week spring festival. Whatever your food traditions may be, the Good Fortune Supermarket has the ingredients. The sheer acreage of this store is amazing. The seafood counter goes on for miles including tanks full of live fish and crabs.
A big family reunion dinner is usually held on Lunar New Year’s Eve, which falls on January 28 this year. The menu is carefully chosen to include dishes associated with luck, including fish (the Chinese word for it also sounds like “surplus”), puddings (symbolizes advancement) and foods that look like gold ingots (such as dumplings).
In 2025 we celebrate the Year of the Snake (a little too on the nose — no jokes for now). But good news if you are pregnant:
Snake babies are often described as wise beyond their years. They’re known for their calm demeanor, resourcefulness, and ability to analyze situations before taking action.
Cultural traditions for the new year include cleaning one’s house to remove dust and bad luck, and decorating with lucky red items. Good Fortune has some hanging ornaments, banners, and poppers. And lots of joss sticks.
