Still Open . . .

For now. The Roger Williams National Memorial on North Main Street is run by the National Park Service which is currently under attack by the hateful goons in Washington. And while we may not have geysers, we do have rangers, and those assigned here in Providence are excellent at what they do. I think they may also have enough seniority to escape the purges now being aimed at new hires (AP 2.19.25).

But I don’t know that for sure because the ranger behind the desk today was unable to give me a statement, which was expected.

And what would our current administration even know of the park system? I’m guessing that a man who has to drive his golf cart onto the putting green, has not done much hiking in the wilderness. And the mole man who is actually running the country does not appear to have seen the sun in decades. The National Park System to them is a map of exploitable natural resources. But it turns out that these brilliant businessmen may not have factored in  . . . well, anything. Maybe they should take a look at the Forbes article “NPS Layoffs Spark Protests, Threaten $640 Billion Recreation Industry.”

Won’t these dreadful people start pissing off the wrong people pretty soon?

At any rate, we support our National Park System. All of it. From the redwood forests to the intersection of Smith and North Main Street.

The Memorial has a great book and gift shop. These plaques are a favorite.

While building a new life in Massachusetts, Roger Williams began preaching “new and dangerous ideas:” religious freedom and spiritual equality. So of course he had to be banished. Thanks to aid and supplies from the Wampanoag and Narragansett Indians, he survived a brutal winter and found his way here. And many of those dangerous ideas found their way into the U.S. Constitution.
