And the bad news just keeps coming. The Olneyville New York System has been sold to the same crass businessman who recently bought the Old Canteen where he will be opening another Wally’s Wieners. (Note: He immediately removed the iconic Old Canteen sign.) Will this latest acquisition become a new addition to the burgeoning Wally’s empire? Ooh, giant espresso martinis.
The Heritage Restaurant Group emphasized that it intends on retaining Olneyville’s employees, as well as the menu “that Rhode Islanders have come to love.” The Stevens family will also stay on board to ensure a seamless transition.
What about the sign? What about the name?
Let’s be clear, we in no way blame the Stevens family for making this deal. They have worked hard and earned the big pay day. However, from now on I will be taking my business to Baba’s Original NY System on Smith Street. Go say hello to the Toprak family. Their weiners are great.
