(3.22) The Roger Williams National Memorial will be hosting author Charlotte Carrington-Farmer this Saturday for a discussion of her latest work, “Roger Williams and His World: A History in Documents.” She will be joined by historical re-enactor and retired National Park Ranger John McNiff.
During this discussion, Dr. Carrington-Farmer talks with McNiff about how her latest collection makes the writings of one of the most documented figures from 17th-century New England more accessible to readers. They will discuss the founding of Providence, Williams’s beliefs about religious freedom and the separation of church and state, and his relationships with Indigenous peoples. Dr. Carrington-Farmer holds a Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge and specializes in early American history.
Dr. Carrington-Farmer and Roger Williams went to the same school! It appears she is currently on the faculty at Roger Williams University.
McNiff is well-known in these parts as the definitive Roger. In 1996 he began working with the National Park Service and within a year was stationed at the Roger Williams National Memorial. McNiff’s research into 17th-century New England and English history made him a respected authority on Roger Williams. He has been an historical re-enactor since the mid-1970s and has decades of experience with black powder weapons.
