This happy announcement comes from the folks at Roger Williams Park Zoo. We are happy to share a Chilean flamingo chick has hatched. This now five-day old chick is a historical birth for our Zoo; the first flamingo born at RWPZoo in 22 years. Mom is doing a great job tending to her little one. […]
Urban wildlife photographer Peter Green of Providence Raptors is a favorite here at The Dose. For several years he has allowed us to use his gorgeous images, usually involving the peregrine falcon nesting box but not always: Remember the Cooper’s hawk that ruled the Arcade roost for a few days in January? The snowy owl?
“But where’s the party?” On Thursday, June 11, the ASRI reported that the fourth and final fledgling had “. . . left the nest box at 7:09AM this morning.” (They have a video of those final teetering, tottering moments.) But the show is not over just yet. From Peter Green at Providence Raptors, June/July is
There was a bit of drama recently when one of the more adventurous fledglings started flapping around the parapets and fell out of view. Peter Green of Providence Raptors updated worried viewers on Facebook: All’s well with the first Peregrine Falcon fledgling. Webcam watchers saw it slip from the ledge last night and contacted me
That is probably Number Four sunning himself behind the box. You can just barely see his beak on the right. Remember, the two biggest fledglings are the females; the smaller two are the males. Things happen quickly now as the last of their down feathers give way to adult flight feathers. PBS has this: Hatchlings
The Hummingbird Palace — an installation created to change and evolve over time — was erected by artist Esther Solondz in Lippitt Memorial Park. The piece was fabricated in 2015 of thin welded steel rod, translucent threadline, epoxy putty, clear silicon rubber, and urethane. Once the structure was installed, flowering vines — both perennials and
They grow so fast. We now have four hungry, blotchy teenagers, and the feeding routine has accelerated considerably which makes for good box watching. It’s getting pretty crowded in there (see below). They try stretching their wings and just fall over. Get your kids hooked. It occurred to me that for all you newly-minted home
And don’t they look thrilled. Last Friday a crew from the Audubon Society of Rhode Island (ASRI), along with photographer Peter Green, climbed atop the Superman Building to perform their annual banding visit to the peregrine nesting box. They were also able to determine the sex of the four eyases: two females and two males.
In the Before Time this was a real live auction with a bar and food and fun people. But this year ‘Party for the Peregrines’ will be a four-day virtual online auction with proceeds going to support the peregrine nesting box, among other worthy ASRI programs. Meet the Audubon’s Ambassadors and join the trivia contest,
Happy Mother’s Day to the queen of isolation. How many long hours have you spent brooding up there in the Fortress of Solitude? The cold wind . . . that endless cheeping. Go grab yourself some squab tartare. You’ve earned it! The kids will be fine. They’re fine. Go here to watch the nesting box.
One . . . two . . . four . . . I’m going to take the Audubon Society’s word for it, because all I see is a plate of floating islands under a mohair pillow sham. Even on their “four eyases” video it is hard to sort them out. What is an eyas? A
This image was taken yesterday at feeding time and shows that two of the three eggs have hatched. I have been watching all morning and the parent on the nest won’t budge. It is possible there is one more nestling under there. If you enjoy watching the Peregrines, please consider a donation to help keep
For a better view of the eggs go to Providence Raptors — Mr. Green tuned in earlier today and found an interesting visitor in attendance! (Apparently the peregrines are ordering home delivery.) Peter also shared this bit of reproductive biology that was new to me. How does a falcon lay 4-5 eggs? They arrive every
