If this were 1996, my mom and dad would be schlepping me over to Joey Frank’s parents’ house this weekend to break the Yom Kippur fast. But it’s 2007, and I don’t fast for nobody (well, except for SEIU, sometimes). I haven’t got much to atone for this year, anyway.
Joey will be near to my heart nonetheless, as I trek up to Boston to see his film, Manda Bala, which just opened at the Kendall Theater, and whose production was Joey’s excuse for taking like 7 years to graduate from Brown.
Manda Bala is an examination of corruption and class warfare in Brazil as told through the stories of a wealthy businessman, a plastic surgeon who assists kidnapping victims and a politician whose income relies on a frog farm.
The movie is good, exciting, and pretty, and managed to win Sundance this year. A lot of folks love it. The Onion, uhh, doesn’t so much. You should check it out anyway. (And it’s not as grizzly as all the reviewers let on.)
