I can’t believe I haven’t found the time to post re: the ceiling collapse at Black Rep, but now that we’re opening our doors again tonight for Latin Jazz & Salsa, I think it is finally appropriate to lay the cards on the table and dispel any last remaining rumors. From Artistic/Executive Director Donald W. King:
Following a two-week closure caused by the sudden collapse of 1/3 of its café ceiling on December 27th, The Providence Black Repertory Company will host a Re-Opening Celebration on Friday, January 11, 2008 at 5pm until closing. Black Rep artists, friends, and staff will come together for an evening celebrating the organization’s award-winning Theater, Education, and Public Programs. Black Rep will also be celebrating the re-launch of Afro-sonic: DJs Mikedelick and Blackdove with live drumming by resident drummer Sidy Mäiga. Fresh from a recent appearance on BET’s “106 and Park”, Black Rep host, Chachi Carvalho, will be the Master of Ceremonies for impromptu Theater, African Drumming, Poetry, Hip Hop performances, and more. The cost of admission is a suggested tax-deductible contribution of $15, which can be made at The Black Rep Box Office.
Open Monday through Saturday for Public Programs, the Black Rep has suffered a loss of more than $25,000 of revenue from the sudden closure. In addition, insurance will not pay for all of the expenses involved in the repair and cleaning. Contributions to Black Rep’s “Save the Ceiling Fund” are encouraged and appreciated.
“Since 1996, the Black Rep has contributed to the development of artists, youth arts education, and the cultural literacy of its community by offering widely accessible, free and low-cost programming inspired by the cultural traditions of the African Diaspora.” Says Artistic/Executive Director Donald W. King. “We pride ourselves in our mission and our commitment to the artists that have made this venue their home, and an indelible part of Providence’s cultural scene. Now its time to give thanks and bring our artists back home!”
