Origami Poems Project At Rochambeau Library

Origami poems are actually a collection of one to five original poems which are “bound” in a “book” that requires one page of paper to make.

This idea began as a class prompt given to a group of poets by Barbara Schweitzer. It was her idea of creating and spreading these books of poetry à la Johnny Appleseed that inspired the Origami Poems Project.

The Origami Poems Project distributes free poetry throughout the state of RI. The project boasts volumes of poetry from poets living as far away as Indonesia. One page, folded in origami fashion, includes an entire collection of poetry. We’re distributing the poems in small plastic boxes and in zip-lock bags affixed to telephone poles throughout the state. You can find these collections in libraries, coffee shops, art centers, and bookstores. Visit Origami Poems for a complete list of displays and participating poets.

Please join us on Tuesday, April 13th for a conversation about the Origami Poems Project and learn how to create and fold your own origami poem book in the Rochambeau Library lower-level Conference Room. Space is limited, so call ahead or email dbrophy@provcomlib.org to reserve seating. Suggested audience includes adults, teens, educators, and origami and poetry enthusiasts!

4pm to 5:45pm, Tuesday, Rochambeau Library, 708 Hope Street, 272.3780
