The Wilbury Group presents ‘The Lieutenant of Inishmore’

Kicking 2011 off with a bang,The Wilbury Group is proud to present its most ambitious work to date, Martin McDonagh’s explosive farce The Lieutenant of Inishmore, January 6-16 2011 at Conley’s Wharf. Originally produced in 2003, after years of McDonagh’s trying, The Lieutenant of Inishmore went on to win a number of impressive awards, including the Olivier Award for ‘Best New Comedy’ (2003) and an Obie Award for ‘Best Play’ (2006). In its 2007 Broadway run it was nominated for a Tony and a Drama Desk Award for ‘Best Play’.

With violent hilarity McDonagh’s
Inishmore is a grim critique of the absurdity of modern terrorism with its stunningly funny tale about a ruthless Irish Liberation Army enforcer and the one thing he loves more than anything else in the world… his little black cat, Wee Thomas. In his wildly funny and bloody Tarantino-esque black comedy, McDonagh takes a hard look at the hypocrisy of violence in society. The London Times called it “bitterly blood curdling and breathtakingly funny!”

Synopsis;
Set in 1993 in County Galway on the rocky island of Inishmore, off the coast of Ireland. Padraic is a terrorist with no feeling for those he tortures or kills, yet has an obsessive attachment to Thomas, his beloved cat. But someone has murdered poor wee Thomas. Was it an accident or an execution? Either way, the death must be concealed before ‘Mad Padraic’ returns from a stint of torture and bombing. Otherwise the recriminations will be horrifying.

Directed by Josh Short, and featuring performances by veteran Providence actors Joe Short, Brien Lang, Joe Ouellette, Jo-an Peralta, Jed Brainerd, Jeff Hodge, Dennis Kozee and Bonnie Griffin, The Lieutenant of Inishmore promises to be the theater event that will leave audiences breathless.
