This is a reminder that sailing lessons are available right here in the city. Membership to the Community Boating Center (CBC) is required, but then access to the boats is free. Further, the CBC is actually a non-profit with the larger community outreach mission of teaching local disadvantaged youth how sail. Adult and family membership fees are funneled into after-school and summer youth programs. Everybody’s a winner . . . as long as you wear sunblock.
The CBC began operating in 1994 by a group of local sailors who wanted to share their passion for sailing with others. They believed sailing should not be limited to the privileged few. Instead, they felt the joy, freedom, and responsibility of sailing should be available to everyone, regardless of income or background.
There are many children in the greater Providence community who have few safe and healthy available summer activities. Non-sailors may ask, “why sailing?” when Providence already has organizations that offer a variety of sports and recreational activities for low and middle-income youth and families.
For the child at risk or adrift on Providence’s streets, there are few, if any, activities that teach so many important virtues and lessons about life the way sailing does.
