‘One Gun Gone’ Opens Downtown

Head downtown for the new exhibition by artist Scott Lapham. More than just a statement on America’s gun problem, this project aims to do something about it. ‘One Gun Gone’ takes over the pop-up space at 233 Westminster Street this Saturday. The exhibit runs through January 26. (Facebook event.)

One Gun Gone takes one gun off the streets, makes art from that gun and sells that art to fund a gun buy back taking more guns off the streets. All artwork sold from the Jan 12th opening night from 5-8 and the duration of the show from Jan 7-Jan 26th will be used for our 2019 gun buy back. Artwork in diverse mediums from One Gun Gone Students, high school youth workshops and adult artists will be on display.

Students have been learning how to cast sculptures in glass, wax, even crayons. The artist explains the heartbreaking impetus of the project:

One Gun Gone is a multidisciplinary gun violence prevention public art project in which students from underserved neighborhoods in Providence RI participate in a professional art making and marketing exercise that provides immersive experiences at an art college, an advertising agency, a community youth arts center and positive interactions with local law enforcement agencies. The One Gun Gone project was inspired by the passing of four of my teenage students from gun violence over the past fifteen years.

Exhibit opens, 5pm to 8pm, Saturday, January 12, 233 Westminster Street, (directions)
