The Providence Flea remains indoors at the Farm Fresh Market Hall for a few more weeks, thru May 7. The Flea continues to be well-curated with quality vintage collectibles, unique DIY crafts, home decor, and baked goods. Sunny spring weather can be enjoyed inside as the facility can open up its doors and windows. And there are benches outside for sitting and eating and drinking. Get a cone at Wright’s Creamery and watch the passing parade.
Spring Flingin’ this weekend at the Flea! We’re back for another Sunday featuring vintage and handmade goods from 80+ artisans and small businesses based in the New England area! Plus tasty eats and baked goods, hot and iced coffee, pastries, and food trucks vending with us this weekend.
The shrubs seen here are shadblow (Amelanchier canadensis) an east coast native also known as shadbush and serviceberry. This multi-stemmed, deciduous shrub blooms just as the shad start their spring run, hence the name. (Foodies know this signals the arrival of shad roe! Exact timing can vary; consult your fishmonger.) Humans and birds love the fruit.
Early European settlers, learning from the native population, found them most useful for puddings and pies, the seeds giving a cherry flavor. Cooked berries were great for berry muffins.
Final indoor flea of the season will be Sunday, May 7th . . . Mother’s Day. Then it’s back to South Water Street on June 4th.
