Holiday Market At Grant’s Block

I decided to checkout the Christmas Holiday Market at Grant’s Block last night because that’s my job. I’m happy to report that, even with the cold temps, the scene was festive and well-attended. And nearby restaurants were hopping. Thumbs up to In Downcity who collaborated with the Providence Tourism Council to pull this all together.

Over the first two weekends of December on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, Grant’s Block becomes into an outdoor holiday marketplace for drinking, eating, music, and shopping. And lots of lights. Grant’s Block is at the corner of Westminster and Union Streets.

Check out the In Downcity site for a complete schedule of events. For instance, Saturday, December 7th, runs from noon to 8pm with wreath making, an outdoor oyster bar at Gift Horse, roaming holiday characters, ice sculptures, face painting, the Leland Baker Trio kicks off at 5:30pm in the Lodge, two of my favorite food trucks — Blount’s and Ja Patty — will be set up on Union Street, and there’s corn hole.

And there are heaters and tentage (The Lodge) for staying warm (and sitting and eating and listening to the music). Nobody seemed to be thinking anything of the weather. And you want to wear your hats and scarves in December!

This of course is not the only thing going on downtown. Tonight, December 7, will be the final night of Three Nights of Lights featuring the Sound Sculpture in Biltmore Park, and the Avenue Concept installation behind City Hall on Eddy Street.
