Artist CW Roelle is certainly versatile. He draws in pencil, prints in (or maybe on) cheese, but he is best known for his insanely intricate wire drawings, some of which are up now at Julian’s on Broadway where you will find this touching slice of life, “They’ll Come, They Will. I’ll Unlock the Door,” painted steel, roughly 14″x 17″. Roelle answered my email inquiry:
I’m glad you gravitated to the “They’ll Come…” piece, I like that one, it took a long time to make because I kept having other projects but it is the first in what will be a big series on aging (and more being middle aged). That scene is the right before a party moment and the guy is wondering if anyone will show up. I had initially intended it to be an art opening but a party is more personal and the character is insecure and the woman is holding him up from the gloom of doubt but that’s hard for her so she too is weary. Yay party!
Roelle has managed to capture this emotionally resonant moment in wire. The woman’s little hat, the punch bowl . . . this scene just kills me. Roelle, known as Sonny to his friends, graduated with a BFA in 1998 from the Maryland Institute College of Art. Go to CW Roelle Art for his portfolio; he is available for commissions. More images at his IG page. (And check out The Three Stooges in pencil!)
