‘Kaspar’ At Brown — On Language And Personhood

kaspar poster ‘Kaspar’, the latest production of Brown University’s Sock & Buskin theater group, is this season’s Senior Slot Production. This year that would be Ioana Jucan, whose concentration is in the Modern Culture and Media department — expect some audio and video effects to enhance the action. The play is the work of Austrian playwright Peter Handke who describes Kaspar thus.

A terrifyingly comic play, a poetic meditation on language, identity, home(lessness), memory, and theatre. Also called “a speech torture”, Kaspar reconstructs the life on stage of Kaspar – the theatre figure and sometimes clown inspired from Kaspar Hauser, “riddle of his times” and of history, a mysterious speechless foundling who appeared in a German town in 1828 after sixteen years spent outside of all human society.
Immediately following the Friday performance, there will be a talkback with the cast and crew and with Professor Thomas Kniesche of Brown’s German Studies department. Four performances: 8pm Thursday through Saturday, 2pm matinee on Sunday. For ticket info go here.

December 2 through 5, Leeds Theatre, Lyman Hall, 77 Waterman Street
