Painted Bodies — Roustan At AS220

Ripple (part view) You only have through next Monday to catch ‘Transfigure’, the exhibition down at AS220. Artist Paul Roustan has some vivid and captivating work in the show — this is a section of ‘Ripple’ a digital print on canvas of his body-painted model, Lee. Using airbrush and stencils he transforms his smooth and naked models into other-worldly creatures. A video monitor runs a mesmerizing time-lapse photography loop of Roustan executing the process on several different models, from start to finish. So what is the path that leads to this unique art form? According to Bill Van Siclen’s piece in the ProJo,

Born and raised in Chicago, Roustan began his career as a graphic designer working on everything from advertising campaigns to comic books. To supplement his income, he also worked a variety of odd jobs, including a brief stint as a paid cartoonist and caricaturist at a Six Flags amusement park. It was there, he says that he was introduced to the art and business of body painting.

The show includes drawings by Raymond Lizotte, sculpture by Dan Potter, and an installation by Brian O’Malley.

‘Transfigure’ through Monday, December 27th, AS220, 115 Empire Street
