Sensory Overload And Deprivation — Saturday At Granoff

entangled witness This sounds like a groovy happening! The new Granoff Center is going to come alive Saturday night as the Art Tec Festival continues with top-to-bottom large-scale multi-media projects and interactive installations. And it is free and open to the public. Read the descriptions below.

The fourteen installations each occupy their own space, so this will be a rare opportunity for an audience to become familiar with all aspects of the new Granoff Center. The artwork is high-tech and ambitious, with a wide range of subjects. Works will include a sensory deprivation tank with ten speaker surround-sound; 100 interactive vines that dangle from the ceiling and play music; a 3-screen dance party with virtual and live guests; a chair on a platform that moves in sync with a similar platform that sits on the Providence River; a hologram; a bed that the viewer lies down upon to be placed inside of a film; and many more immersive and interactive works.

This is a showcase for work from two advanced production seminars at Brown: ‘Large-Scale Multimedia Projects’, a MEME graduate seminar taught by Todd Winkler, and ‘Narrative and Immersion’, co-taught by Leslie Thornton (MCM) and Todd Winkler (MEME). ‘Narrative and Immersion’ combines interactive technologies with cinematic techniques of narrative to create participatory multi-channel audio and
video installations. (Image here: ‘Entangled Witness’ by Todd Winkler, 2009)

Free and open to the public, 6pm to Midnight, Saturday, Granoff Center, 154 Angell Street (and presumably somewhere out on the Providence River)
