Now THIS Is What I Call Public Art

Bayliss Update/ Mid-Ocean Studio Big thanks to Megan Hall over at WRNI for bringing this amazing artist to my attention. Brower Hatcher is the director of Mid-Ocean Studio, a team of designers, fabricators and technical personnel who create these dreamy illuminated sculptures. Nearly fifty of these pieces are installed around North America — head out to Council Bluffs, Iowa for this one — yet we don’t have a single one here in Rhode Island. This is all the more shocking because Hatcher and his team — the studio keeps about ten people employed, hooray — work out of the Steel Yard right here in Providence.

Go here to listen to Hall’s interview — August artscape: public artist Brower Hatcher. Hatcher makes a point of mentioning how the communities surrounding these installations always seem to “perk up.”
