(11.17) From Occupy Providence,
On Thursday, join Occupy Providence to show that City Hall belongs to the 99%. We will meet in the lobby at 6pm for a brief General Assembly before entering the City Council meeting at 7pm to show our support for a pro-Occupy Resolution, as well as for an ordinance that will lift the curfew on Burnside Park and expand free speech rights for all. We will then return to Burnside Park together to celebrate more than one month of Occupy Providence.
City Council Meeting at 7pm, Thursday, November 17, Providence City Hall, 25 Dorrance Street
I’ve never been a big fan of nor believer in public protests. Such demonstrations are confrontational, undignified and rarely do anything to cause anything to change. I feel this way even if it’s a cause or issue I believe in. I’m not sure I can support what the “occupy” movement stands for as I don’t believe they have made it clear. However, I don’t think camping out in Burnside Park is going to do anything to help their cause, whatever it may be. This occupation is making the participants into a public spectacle and is taxing the time and funds of local law enforcement and government. I fail to see how this benefits anybody either. If the participants of this movement really want to change the world for the better, I think they can find more constructive methods to do so.
