(11.15) And don’t miss the exciting sequel . . . The Sayles Sales. Okay, that last one needs work. At any rate, the Brown University Library will host a panel discussion featuring several of America’s most successful and renowned thriller writers. Author Jon Land ’79, will moderate the discussion between David Baldacci, Steve Berry, Neslon DeMille, Lisa Gardner, and R.L. Stine in Salomon Hall. A book signing and reception will follow in Sayles Hall.
According to Phil Eil’s cover story in the The Phoenix one writer has devised a formula for creating book titles.
Steve Berry has recorded free podcasts that explain how the second words in his titles — “Romanov,” “Templar,” “Paris” — offer what he calls the “Oooh Factor,” a subject that triggers immediate, hungry curiosity when announced to a crowd. The third word in his titles — “Legacy,” “Link,” “Prophecy,” “Betrayal,” “Deception” — links the “Oooh Factor” to a high-stakes “So What? Factor” in the present day, he says.
The panel is celebrating the upcoming thriller archive being created at Brown. Writes Eil, “Thanks to [Jon] Land’s behind-the-scenes campaigning, Brown University recently signed a deal with trade group International Thriller Writers to start a first-of-its-kind thriller archive among its special collections at the John Hay Library.” Judging from Eil’s enthusiastic tone, he may disappear into the building never to be seen again. Read all about it in my upcoming novel . . . The Hay Stacks.
