‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ Screening And Q&A At The Cable Car

JCS (10.24) Special event at the Cable Car Cinema this Thursday and it counts as going to church for the week I think (with the new pope, definitely). Meet that way-too-hot Jesus feller who made you so confused, and give Pontius Pilate a piece of your mind. Actors Ted Neeley (Jesus) and Barry Dennen (Pilate) will be on hand to reminisce and answer your questions. Somebody ask Jesus what his middle initial ‘H’ stands for. (Whether they will speak before, or after, this special 40th anniversary screening of “Jesus Christ Superstar” is unclear.)

Adapted from Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s Broadway rock opera, “Jesus Christ Superstar” recounts the last days of Jesus Christ (Ted Neeley) from the perspective of Judas Iscariot (Carl Anderson), his betrayer. As Jesus’ following increases, Judas begins to worry that Jesus is falling for his own hype, forgetting the principles of his teachings and growing too close to the prostitute Mary Magdalene (Yvonne Elliman). After Jesus has an outburst in a temple, Judas turns on him.

The trial goes badly, he’s executed, it doesn’t take, and . . . yadda yadda yadda . . . here we are in the 21st century with Michele Bachmann sitting by the phone waiting for her big date.

(I called the Cable Car and they were not certain whether the Q&A would be before or after the movie. We sort of figured it would be after. At any rate, something is happening at 7pm. Running time 108 minutes.)

7pm, Thursday, October 24, Cable Car Cinema, 204 South Main Street, 272.3970
