Getting Bernie On The Ballot

Full steam ahead for the Rhode Island Progressive Democrats of America who, along with other motivated groups and individuals, are collecting the signatures needed for getting Bernie Sanders on the Rhode Island ballot. The state will need to certify 1000  signatures (although more than 1000 will be collected as a cushion).

This year’s Presidential Preference Primary Election will be held on April 26th. The Secretary of State has a useful guide.
Lauren Niedel, RIPDA deputy state coordinator, has announced several events planned around the state and notes the deadline, “February 3 is the very last day we can turn in signatures, so we need to know if we need to keep collecting through that day.”
In Providence we have the following signature drives:
*11am to 1pm, Thursday, January 28, Blue Room Café, 75 Waterman Street.
*8:45am to 12:45, Saturday, January 30, Hope Artiste Farmers’ Market, 1005 Main Street Pawtucket.
Signature collection & notarizing:
*1pm to 4pm, Sunday, January 31, Ogie’s Trailer Park, 1155 Westminster Street.

RI Rocks for Bernie! (Every so often we send you out of town for something special, and this should be a doozie. You think notaries don’t know how to party?) Signature collecting, signature turn-in with notary, 4pm to 10pm, Sunday, January 31, at the Ocean Mist for pete’s sake!) Featuring the Copacetics, Jungle Dogs, and the Silks!

Reminders for collectors: Do not sign the back of the sheet until you are standing in front of the notary. You will be asked to swear that you have witnessed every signature on your sheet. Don’t share your sheet.

Each town needs a separate petition sheet. Always ask the person who is signing where they are registered to vote before they sign.

A sheet can be turned in with fewer than the forty signatures. Even if you end up with only one or two signatures — turn it in.

Who can sign? Any registered voter, party affiliation does not matter.

The League of Women Voters have this under “Rhode Island Primary Rules,”

However, in a primary election, you must choose the ballot of the party with which you are affiliated. Voters unaffiliated in any party may choose the primary ballot of any party. By voting on the ballot of a party, you become a member of that party. Right after voting, you may choose to become unaffiliated or a member of another party. This is done by signing a paper (affidavit) available at the polls after you have voted. Ask a poll worker for the affidavit, fill it out, sign it, hand it in, and get your receipt.
