PrideFest And Queer Arts Festival

(6.19) What a weekend! First, Pride RI has events scheduled for the entire weekend but Saturday is always the big day for PrideFest. Starting at noon on Saturday, South Water Street will be closed to traffic for the street festival — entertainment, food, drink, vendors — until sunset.

Then head downtown and stake out your place for watching the Illuminated Night Parade which is hugely entertaining with floats and music and dancing and some outrageous costumes and get-ups. You will dance along. (Go here for parade map.)

It’s such a horrible time for the gay community. We’ve had the vigils — and hooray for Senators Reed and Whitehouse for taking part in the filibuster and actually trying to do something!  — it’s okay to let off a little steam and have some fun. The police are stepping up security.

Also on tap is the AS220 Queer Arts Festival with discussions, dance parties, drag artists, a variety show, and more. Friday is the Queer Punk Show and the Glitter Beach art installation runs all day Saturday. Andy Smith has the details at the ProJo.
