Jack Black Coming to Town

Who doesn’t love this man? “School of Rock” is the best. And “Bernie” needs to be seen by more people — Mr. Black must record a gospel album at some point. And of course, Tenacious D.

At any rate, it’s official, Jack Black will soon be filming “The Polka King” in and around the state. It seems the Modern Diner is preparing for its close-up. According to the ProJo,

Shooting will take place at locations around the state from mid-July through mid-August, the Rhode Island Film & Television Office announced Thursday afternoon.

According to trade journal The Hollywood Reporter, Black produces and stars in the film about the rise and fall of Jan Lewan, a polka singer who went to prison for running a Ponzi scheme. The movie is based on a 2007 documentary made for Court TV.

But what about his Scrabble needs? I would like to extend an invitation to Mr. Black who once dropped in on the NASPA Santa Monica Club and acquitted himself quite well. Here in Providence a (non-sanctioned) group meets every Monday night after 7pm at Julian’s Restaurant on Broadway. (A place that Fred Armisen once called “Really cool.”) We play two-to-a-board and challenges are adjudicated to The Official Word List no exceptions. While we are serious about winning, we play without timers so we can eat and drink, and I think you will enjoy the dishwasher’s iPod which seems to dominate. We sit directly beneath the speakers and right next to the bathroom.

If relaxing out in public is too awkward, I would be open to an extracurricular game or two. I have maple tiles.
