Big Money For Bold Ideas — Apply Now

The Rhode Island Foundation is looking for people with bold ideas for moving the state forward and is offering $600,000 in seed grants through the Carter Fellowships for Entrepreneurial Innovation.

Perhaps the best way to understand what ideas the Foundation might consider is through the testimonials of past innovation fellows. These entrepreneurs are certainly an eclectic group.

Check out the video presentation by Dan Kamil and Emily Steffian, owners of the beloved Cable Car Cinema. (Full disclosure: I consider Dan and Emily friends, but I know them entirely from going to movies at the Cable Car. I suspect they have many such friends.) They have a vision for creating Rhode Island’s only multi-screen exhibition space and educational facility focusing on first-run, independent film programming; repertory series, film festivals, and a curriculum in film history and media literacy. Yes, please. Go to Providence Cinematique News for more details on this project. Their grant helped them secure a vacant property on Westminster Street where this dream will become reality. Can not wait.

Other innovation fellows are working on projects such as: eradicating the Hepatitis C virus in Rhode Island; a centralized culinary hub for the state; design and production of digitally printed textiles; and one gentleman is developing something called “The Blue Mussel Spat Attachment Cord.” How is that for eclectic?

The deadline to apply is December 19! The Foundation expects to announce the recipients in April of 2018.
