Sine Nomine Choral Ensemble At St. Martin’s

(11.10) St. Martin’s Church will be the setting for ‘Advent Awaiting,’ the first concert of the season by the Sine Nomine Choral Ensemble and their new artistic director, John Verkuilen.

In speaking of his first concert with Sine Nomine, Verkuilen said ‘Advent Awaiting’ is autumn’s journey toward the season of repose, patience, and adoration so clearly expressed through inspirational works of Tallis, Stanford, Poston, and others.

Architectural historian John Hutchins Cady described St. Martin’s Church as “English Gothic.” Both the church and the parish house of St. Martin’s are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It’s a pretty little church, but I wish those plastic-coated banners weren’t hanging there. (Jeez, those things are hanging everywhere!)

The church building, designed by Wallis E. Howe, is a granite structure constructed in early 20th century Gothic Revival style. Its tower contains a set of ten bells which parishioners play on special occasions.

In the interior of the Church, the nave (the central, open space of the church) is supported by oak truss work and lit by clerestory windows.

A second performance will take place at 3pm, Sunday, November 11, in Grace Church in  New Bedford.
$20 GA, 7:30pm, Saturday, November 10, St. Martin’s Church, 50 orchard Avenue, (directions)
