Still time to catch the show at the Chazan Gallery which features a pairing of painting and photography. Channing Gray describes the two artists as veterans of the local art scene in his review in the ProJo .
They would be Denny Moers, the innovative photographer whose manipulated images look more like paintings, and longtime RISD professor David Frazer, painter of birds and geometric mazes. Together, they make for an intriguing pairing, albeit images that consist of variations on a theme.
As a chronic manipulator of photographs, I can appreciate when it is done with real intention and artistry. Like Gray, I was drawn to Moers’ small animal mask grouping.
And don’t miss a group of small but spooky photos of animal masks staring out of the darkness that hang in the hallway. These are simple party masks of cats and what appears to be a wolf that, thanks to Moers’ darkroom sleight of hand, take on a haunting, supernatural vibe.
Seen here is a detail from Frazer’s ‘oil on canvas, A Bridge Across.
Through December 5, Chazan Gallery, 228 Angell Street, (directions)
