The Chinese Year of the Pig kicks off today with the Spring Festival which runs through February 19th. To ensure good fortune and happiness during the Spring Festival there are a few taboos: do not clean or sweep; do not demand debt repayment; do not visit the wife’s family; do not break glass or ceramics.
Speaking of ceramics you should definitely not break, this is ‘Pig in a Pen’ dating from 1-200 CE in the Han Dynasty. This glazed earthenware piece, maker unknown, is on display in the Asian Gallery of the RISD Museum.
