RISD Senior Textiles Show At Woods-Gerry

(5.14) Textiles take over this week at the Senior Shows at Woods-Gerry Gallery. This is always a big favorite, and last night’s opening was mobbed which made it impossible to photograph the vivid cactus sculpture that greets one at the entrance. The show includes fabric sculptures, wall hangings, apparel, soft furniture, and a room-filling suspended diaphanous cubicle.

The dress collection seen here is ‘Nowruz’ by Ava Vossoughí. Nowruz refers to the Persian New Year. The first day of the Iranian calendar falls on the spring equinox. These are the springiest of dresses with a little Carnaby Street mixed in.

The three pix below are: The lovely Jamielee Perez posing with her digitally printed fabric which drapes off the wall and turns into dresses, ‘Individualizing the De-Individualized.’ A large panel of hanging fans is ‘Containment of Time’ by April Lee. Below that is the captivating jacquard ‘Enclosure’ by Stefan Sehringer.

You only get the chance to meet the senior artists and their models at an opening reception. It’s a big party and lots of fun — but it is hard to get a good look at things. An added bonus at this time of year is the landscaping around the gallery itself. Just sit a spell and enjoy the view.

The final show is the Senior Invitational which runs from May 31 to June 2.

‘Textiles’ runs through Tuesday, May 14, Woods-Gerry Gallery, Prospect Street, (directions)
