‘Soul’ At Prov Rink

(9.18) The Oscar-winning animated musical “Soul” is the feature this Saturday at Movies at the Providence Rink. Even by Pixar standards, there is a lot going on in this movie: “After landing the gig of a lifetime, a New York jazz pianist suddenly finds himself trapped in a strange land between Earth and the afterlife.” From the New York Times review:

It’s rare for any movie, let alone an all-ages cartoon, to venture into such deep and potentially scary metaphysical territory, but this is hardly the first time that the studio has directed its visual and storytelling resources toward mighty philosophical themes.

The music Oscar went to Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross, and Stephen Colbert’s music director, Jon Batiste (who gave the most charming tribute to George Wein on the show the other night).

At any rate, let’s hear it for middle school band teachers!
