Prov Children’s Film Fest Starts Friday

The annual Providence Children’s Film Festival kicks off Friday with animated, live action, and documentary films from around the world. You can sort through the Film Directory by age, film type, and film category. Many of these are all-ages. There will even be a screening of the 1954 Jules Verne classic, “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea” at the Mt. Pleasant Library! I suspect this will get a lively reception.

The films have been organized into groupings like Bizarro, First Impressions, and, because so many selections are French-language, C’est la Vie. Seen here is “Birth of an Oasis” (I think) coming in at 9 minutes, in French with English subtitles.

Venues include: the Providence Athenaeum, the Gilder Center at Wheeler, Metcalf Auditorium at RISD, the Granoff Center, and the South Providence and Mt. Pleasant community libraries.

The Festival kicks off Friday night at the Gilder Center with a few shorts and then the feature film, “The Magic Flute.” (And hors d’oeuvres and bubbly drinks.) Mozart is expected to make an appearance.

The Providence Children’s Film Festival runs Friday, February 17 — Sunday, February 26
