Kayak, canoe, coracle, whatever your choice don’t forget the safety vest. Small boat launch ramps are dotted around the city; this one is down on Gulf Avenue (continue north on River Road) along the Seekonk River. Explore RI has a list of launches for the entire state. The Seekonk River Small Boat Launch entry has this helpful info:
The driving access to this launch site is a little confusing. Large “Do Not Enter” signs suggest that you should not driving to the parking area but note the smaller “Kayak Launch Parking Only” sign below one of the “Do Not Enter” signs. See the driving directions for more details.
Yeah, that whole Gulf Avenue arrangement has always bugged me . . . home to one castle that has decided they don’t care for taxpayers using a city street maintained by taxpayers.
Explore RI also lists a launch in Merino Park in Olneyville. Merino Park is much improved but I might recommend going to this one with a partner or group of friends. This launch gets you to the Woonasquatucket River. Explore RI advises, “In high water the paddling can be challenging whitewater that should only be attempted by experienced paddlers!”
Don’t own a kayak? Providence Kayak on Dyer Street downtown offers rentals.
Have fun. Stay safe.
