(1.13) Have you still not filed your 2023 tax return? Maybe it’s even been a few years? The Rhode Island Division of Taxation will be holding its Tax Compliance Day this Monday on the Rhode Island College campus. The event is free . . . go get yourself sorted out. Registration is recommended but walk-ins will be accepted. From the ProJo:
The Division of Taxation is bringing together federal tax officials, volunteer tax preparers and officials from across state government on Jan. 13 to help people untangle their old tax problems, called Tax Compliance Day.
The eight-hour session in Providence is an effort by the state Division of Taxation to help people get out from under their tax problems by bringing everyone their problem touches, including the IRS, under one roof for one day to help solve the problems.
The event is solely for taxes from 2023 and before. Go here for a checklist of items to bring. And if you are late in filing your state tax returns because you are also late with your federal returns, don’t despair. They are prepared for that and may still be able to help get you sorted out.
Those who haven’t filed tax returns for 2023 and before will be guided to IRS volunteers, with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance or VITA program, who will prepare tax returns, federal and state, for as late as 2017.
Rhode Island is a “piggyback” state, meaning a federal tax return is needed before someone can file a state tax return.
Think how great it will feel to get this settled . . . and for free.
