Former Rhody governor and current Secretary of Commerce, Gina Raimondo, made a good showing on “60 Minutes” last Sunday explaining what she and the administration have been accomplishing since taking over dealing with international trade and national security. As a pro-business, centrist Democrat, Raimondo was not always a favorite with those to her left on Smith Hill, but after watching this segment, I have to conclude that this may have been one of President Biden’s best appointments. This is one super competent woman.
And she has certainly gotten the attention of the Chinese: Huawei has been using her image in their advertising. From interviewer Lesley Stahl, “Her toughness has made her a target in China where fake ads have her promoting the new Chinese-made smart phone.” (See below.)
Raimondo speaks of the day her father lost his job after 30 years with Bulova Watch when the company moved its operations to China. This pivotal childhood event likely motivated the young Gina who went on the become a Rhodes Scholar, a Yale graduate, a state governor, and the U.S. Secretary of Commerce.
