The rules were simple: No biting, no gouging . . . just like rhythmic gymnastics. As the Paris Olympics draw to a close we recall an event first introduced to the games in 648 BCE: Pankration. Contests were savage, with hitting, kicking, twisting of limbs, strangling, and struggling on the ground allowed. The only recognized
The public is invited to an opening reception Saturday evening of the AS220 August Galleries. Seen here is the work of Renée Elizabeth Neely-Tanner, who looks like she does not suffer fools gladly. Her philosophy: “I am an advocate for artistic freedom. Abstraction is a terrain of infinite possibility. It allows me to explore how
(8.1) The Rhode Island art community is mourning the loss of its patron and dear friend, Dr. Joseph Chazan, who died last Friday. It is impossible to overstate this man’s generosity and influence. Up now at the WaterFire Arts Center is NetWorks Rhode Island and the Chazan Collection: A Half-Century of RI Patronage, a large-scale
These fine art faces should look familiar to locals of a certain age, even if the originals departed the scene nearly two decades ago. They had been painted underneath the I-195 overpass at a time when that highway still spanned Wickenden Street (see below). Now, new and considerably more vivid versions have been painted on
(7.25) Machines With Magnets will host an opening reception for ‘Structural Integrity’ featuring the work of Eli Portman and Adam O’Day. How much art can one man amass over 50 years of collecting? Enough to actually fill the 15,000 square foot main hall at the WaterFire Arts Center with plenty left over for the side gallery, and I suspect there is a storage space somewhere still bursting at the seams. Of course we don’t measure art
When the movie “Problemista” first ran here in April at the Columbus Theatre, I was unaware it had a local angle; I just knew I wanted to see the latest from former SNL writer Julio Torres (remember Papyrus?). The film follows Alejandro, an aspiring toy designer, who moves from his native El Salvador to New

Time to look in on the piano that is the subject of the installation “Piano (de)composition.” We first wrote about this last November following several months of weathering and decay. But something recently caught the attention of NBC News reporter Jesse Kirsch who filed this update last Wednesday, at which time activity on our earlier
Tape artist Michael Townsend was really enjoying himself last night. Not only was he excited that the new documentary “Secret Mall Apartment” would finally be seen by a hometown crowd, but this sneak preview at the Providence Public Library was basically a homecoming party with old friends, including the rest of the “Mall Eight.” Lots
This looks great. A couple of weeks ago we stopped by Ocean State Tackle to get an update on the striped bass. Owner Dave Henault had announced that local artist Umberto Crenca was going to give it a much-needed facelift. Crenca (of Divine Providence fame) is one of Dave’s oldest friends and he had been

I would not normally allow a Yankee fan to throw gang signs at me, but this is Dave Henault, owner of Ocean State Tackle, and he has some fun news to share. We first got to know Dave when covering the first day of trout season every spring, and soon found out that everyone knows
