Providence Native Gavin Russom On Colbert

lcd soundsystem Of course the bigger story is that Providence musician Gavin Russom (that’s him in the white hat on synth) has spent the last year touring the world playing in LCD Soundsystem. (For the recent southern hemisphere portion of the program, the opening act was Andrew W.K., another performer who dresses in white. Hm.) During the 90’s, Fort Thunder and all that, Russom launched a couple of psychedelic noise bands — Soma with cousin Michael Kelley, as well as Corybantes with Brian Chippendale. His later collaboration with Delia Gonzalez — creating electronic musical works and installations — earned critical acclaim and gained an international following. He later moved to Berlin and performed solo as Black Meteoric Star for a few years, later returning to New York, hooking up with James Murphy and DFA. And that is the short version of an unbelievably creative and busy artist/musician who started his career of actually fabricating his own instruments the day he converted his mom’s coffee maker into a trumpet.

Go here to watch their performance on the February 14th episode of the Colbert Report where Russom plays that really satisfying boop-boop-boop riff in the excellent ‘I Can Change’. The tour, and LCD Soundsystem itself, will come to an end on April 2nd at Madison Square Garden.
